Wake Me After the Apocalypse
Wake Me After the Apocalypse follows eighteen-year-old Joanna Murphy, who is chosen to survive a comet impact by entering cryosleep inside an underground bunker. The plan is for her team to wake two hundred years later and help rebuild civilization, but when Joanna wakes up, everyone around her is dead and the bunker exit is blocked.
A lot of the tension comes from Joanna being completely alone and having no idea what went wrong. The book mixes survival, mystery, and post-apocalyptic science fiction while keeping Joanna’s resilience at the centre of the story. It is a fairly quick read, but the setup is strong and the loneliness of waking up in a dead bunker gives it a memorable start to the series.
The Goods
- Strong apocalypse setup
- Good sense of isolation
- Joanna is easy to root for
- The cryosleep idea works well
- Fast, easy pacing
The Bads
- Some survival details are simple
- A few answers take time to arrive
- Side characters get limited development
- The mystery is stronger than the world-building
- Some parts feel familiar for the genre
My Recommendation
This is a good choice for readers who like post-apocalyptic fiction, cryosleep stories, and survival books built around one person waking up into a completely changed world. Joanna’s isolation makes the early part especially tense, and the mystery of what happened to the rest of the bunker keeps the story moving. If you enjoy YA science fiction with survival, resilience, and a strong end-of-the-world setup, Wake Me After the Apocalypse is a solid start to the Bunker series.
