No Planet for Good Men
No Planet for Good Men starts the Forgotten Fallout series on a ruined Earth after an alien invasion has already torn civilization apart. Sheriff Hayden Duke is trying to keep some kind of order in a world that barely has any left, while Marine Isaac Pine is dealing with his own disaster after losing the people he was supposed to protect.
I liked how the book mixed post-apocalyptic survival with that almost western sheriff feel, because it gave the story a little more personality than a straight military sci-fi setup. There was a lot more going on beneath the surface than I first realized, and once Hayden and Isaac’s separate paths started connecting, the larger mystery became much more interesting. Some of the character work could’ve gone deeper, but the ruined-world atmosphere and the sense that the invasion wasn’t really over kept me invested.
The Goods
- Great post-apocalyptic setting
- Hayden has a strong sheriff personality
- Good mix of western and military sci-fi
- The larger mystery builds nicely
- Fast, easy pacing
The Bads
- Some characters need more depth
- A few action scenes feel familiar
- The world could use more explanation
- Some developments happen pretty quickly
- Feels like setup for a bigger series
My Recommendation
This is a good fit if you like post-apocalyptic science fiction, alien invasions, and main characters with that stubborn old-school lawman energy. I liked that the book didn’t spend forever explaining how the world fell apart and instead dropped you into what was left afterward. If you enjoy wasteland survival, military action, strange alien threats, and a mystery that keeps opening into something bigger, No Planet for Good Men is a strong start to the Forgotten Fallout series.
