House of Hollow
House of Hollow follows Iris and her two sisters, who disappeared as children and came back a month later with no memory of where they’d been. Years later, strange things still seem to follow them around, and when one of the sisters suddenly goes missing again, Iris starts digging into what really happened to them the first time.
I loved the slightly eerie feeling that never quite went away. The book has this creepy, dreamlike atmosphere where even normal moments feel a little wrong, and that worked really well for me. The mystery gets stranger as it goes, and even though a few parts felt more confusing than they needed to be, I kept wanting to know what was actually behind the sisters’ disappearance.
The Goods
- Really strong gothic atmosphere
- The sisters are interesting together
- Good central mystery
- Creepy without relying on constant gore
- The story gets stranger in a good way
The Bads
- Some parts are confusing
- A few side characters need more depth
- The pacing slows in places
- The mythology can feel vague
- Some reveals take a while to click
My Recommendation
This is a good fit if you like gothic YA, creepy family mysteries, and stories where something feels wrong long before you understand why. The atmosphere pulled me in before I was fully invested in the plot, and the bond between the sisters gives the story a lot of its emotional weight. If you enjoy dark fairy-tale vibes, missing-person mysteries, and fantasy that gets a little weird and unsettling, House of Hollow is definitely worth trying.
