DARCY COATES
Where He Cant Find You is one of those rare reads that focuses on atmosphere, tension, and character rather than cheap jump scares. The terrifying lore of a town that survives by avoiding a monster called the Stitcher, who takes people and returns their bodies sewn to together with red thread, is so interesting. And the normality of this horror for the children who live there is so fitting. Most normal horror children literally serve no purpose whatsoever, but Abby and her friends feel like real children, and their friendships and fights add a lot to the story, so you actually care what happens to them. It is believable, small town, and their customs are simple but unnerving. The mystery of the Stitcher is so well crafted that I needed to know what was going on. It is unnerving and tense, but not overly graphic, providing a rare offering of scary, fast, and endearing characters to root for.
The Goods:
– Strong creepy setup with a clear rule about the Scratches that is easy to picture and worry about
– A group of kids who feel like real friends and give the story a lot of heart
– Lots of tension and mood without needing graphic violence
The Bads:
– The tone leans a bit younger, which might feel light for very hardened horror readers
– Some of the scares and twists will feel familiar if you read a lot of small town horror
– A few emotional beats are a bit on the nose instead of very subtle
Why I would recommend this book:
I would recommend Where He Cant Find You if you like horror that is creepy and tense but not extreme, with a memorable rule, a strong sense of place, and characters you can care about while you are getting scared.
Every book hits differently for every reader.
Thanks for reading my review.
