Hero
Hero is the ninth book in the expanded Gone series and the final book in the follow-up trilogy. The powers that started back in the FAYZ have now spread much further, and the story brings together the newer characters with some familiar faces as everything builds toward one last major conflict.
I liked that this one felt like it was trying to bring the whole expanded story full circle instead of just ending the newer trilogy on its own. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to some of these characters, and even though the story gets pretty chaotic, the emotional moments worked better for me because of everything that came before. It’s big, messy, violent, and definitely feels like the series going out at full speed.
The Goods
- Big finale energy
- Good mix of old and new characters
- The stakes feel genuinely huge
- Some strong emotional payoffs
- Feels like a true ending to the expanded series
The Bads
- The action can get very chaotic
- A lot of characters to keep track of
- Some storylines wrap up quickly
- A few moments feel over-the-top
- Not every character gets equal closure
My Recommendation
This is a solid ending if you’ve followed both the original Gone books and the follow-up trilogy and want to see the expanded story finally wrap up. I liked that Hero brought familiar characters back into the bigger conflict, because it made the ending feel connected to where the series started instead of like a separate spin-off. If you enjoy YA dystopian fiction with powers, huge stakes, messy moral choices, and finales that go all-in, Hero is a fitting way to close out the nine-book run.
