Here One Moment
Here One Moment starts on an ordinary flight where an older woman suddenly begins walking down the aisle telling passengers the age and cause of their deaths. Most people brush it off as something bizarre that happened on a plane, but once a few of her predictions actually come true, everyone who heard their own future starts looking at life very differently.
The concept alone was enough to make me want to pick this up, but I liked that the book didn’t turn into a simple mystery about whether the woman was psychic. It spends much more time on the passengers, their families, and what knowing your possible future does to the choices you make. There were a few stretches where I wanted things to move a little faster, but the question of whether fate can actually be changed kept pulling me back in.
The Goods
- Really interesting central idea
- Good mix of mystery and emotion
- The different passenger stories add variety
- Makes you think about fate and free will
- Some of the quieter moments hit surprisingly hard
The Bads
- The pacing slows in the middle
- A lot of characters to keep track of
- Some storylines are stronger than others
- The mystery isn’t really the main focus
- A few sections could’ve been trimmed
My Recommendation
This is a good fit if you like character-driven fiction with a strange central idea and a little mystery running underneath everything. I liked how the book took something as simple as being told when you’ll die and explored all the different ways people might react to that information. If you enjoy stories about fate, family, fear, and the choices people make when they suddenly think their time might be limited, Here One Moment gives you a lot to think about without becoming too heavy.
