Forgotten
Forgotten is the first book in The Forgotten series and follows Sheriff Hayden Duke aboard the Pilgrim, a generation ship that has been travelling through space for centuries. His life has always been predictable until his engineer wife discovers a body in a sealed part of the ship where nobody should have been for hundreds of years. When Hayden arrives, both she and the body are gone.
I knew pretty quickly this wasn't going to be the story I expected. What starts as a mystery aboard a generation ship keeps opening into something much bigger, mixing science fiction, survival, horror, and plenty of action. Hayden has that stubborn old-school sheriff personality that keeps the story grounded even when everything around him gets increasingly strange.
The Goods
- Strong mystery from the beginning
- Great generation-ship setting
- Hayden is an entertaining main character
- Good mix of sci-fi, horror, and action
- The story keeps getting bigger
The Bads
- Some characters could use more depth
- A few action scenes feel familiar
- The pacing can get hectic
- Some explanations come fairly late
- The story clearly sets up the larger series
My Recommendation
This is a good choice for readers who like generation ships, military science fiction, post-apocalyptic stories, and mysteries that start small before turning into something much larger. There was a lot more going on beneath the surface than I first realized, and the mix of a missing-person investigation with the secrets of the Pilgrim gives the book a fun hook. If you like fast sci-fi with aliens, survival, hidden parts of a ship, and a sheriff who refuses to let things go, Forgotten is a strong start to the series.
