Fear
Fear is the fifth book in the Gone series and finds the kids inside the FAYZ facing another threat that feels even worse than what they have already survived. The barrier surrounding them begins changing, darkness is closing in, and the creatures and powers inside the dome are becoming harder to control.
The book keeps the series moving at a fast pace while pushing the characters into darker emotional territory. Sam, Caine, Astrid, and the others have all changed a lot since the beginning, and by this point the story feels less like kids trying to survive and more like a full fight over what kind of world will be left when everything is over.
The Goods
- Strong sense of danger
- The stakes keep getting bigger
- Good character development across the series
- Very dark atmosphere
- Keeps the larger mystery moving
The Bads
- Can get extremely bleak
- A lot of characters to keep track of
- Some storylines are stronger than others
- The violence is heavy for YA
- Works best if the earlier books are fresh
My Recommendation
This is a strong entry for readers already invested in the Gone series and wanting the story to keep getting darker and more intense. Fear raises the pressure again while showing how much the characters have changed after everything they have survived inside the FAYZ. If you like YA dystopian fiction with supernatural powers, survival, violence, and a large cast of characters being pushed toward a final confrontation, this one keeps the series moving in a very good direction.
