Dead Inside
Dead Inside follows a hospital security guard with an obsession with the dead who meets a doctor with her own extremely disturbing secrets. Their relationship develops through shared appetites and behaviours that most people would find horrifying, and the book keeps pushing to see just how far both characters are willing to go.
This is extreme horror in every sense and is intentionally disgusting, offensive, and uncomfortable. Underneath the shock value there is a very dark sense of humour and a surprisingly strange relationship between the two main characters, but the book never tries to make either of them sympathetic in a normal way.
The Goods
- Completely commits to its extreme premise
- Very dark sense of humour
- Memorable main characters
- Fast and easy to get through
- Definitely does not play it safe
The Bads
- Extremely graphic subject matter
- Relies heavily on shock value
- Not much traditional character growth
- Some scenes are deliberately disgusting
- Absolutely not for sensitive readers
My Recommendation
This is really only for readers who already know they enjoy extreme horror, splatterpunk, and books designed to cross just about every line possible. Dead Inside is graphic, offensive, and intentionally uncomfortable, but there is also a weirdly funny and almost absurd quality underneath all of it. If you enjoy horror that pushes taboo subjects as far as they can go and you are not easily disturbed by gore, necrophilia, or other extreme content, this one is definitely memorable.
