When the Creatures Come

Horror, Science Fiction

Book Score8.5out of 10
Plot & Storyline 8.5/10
Characters 8.5/10
Dialogue / Writing Style 8.5/10

When the Creatures Come is a strange, unsettling story about a world where people, places, and even memories begin disappearing after mysterious creatures arrive. At the centre is a man known only as X, while several other characters move around him carrying their own regrets, fears, and broken memories.

The book is more psychological and surreal than traditional horror. It is less interested in explaining the creatures and more interested in what happens when reality itself starts feeling unreliable. The shifting voices and dreamlike atmosphere can be confusing at times, but they also give the story a very different feel from a normal monster novel.

The Goods

  • Very strange and memorable atmosphere
  • Strong psychological tension
  • Interesting ideas about memory and identity
  • Feels different from typical horror
  • The mystery stays with you

The Bads

  • Can be confusing in places
  • Not much traditional action
  • The creatures stay very mysterious
  • Some sections feel slow
  • The surreal style will not work for everyone

My Recommendation

This is a good choice for readers who like psychological horror, surreal fiction, and stories that leave a lot open to interpretation. The creatures themselves are almost less important than the feeling of reality slowly slipping away, which gives the book a strange and unsettling mood. If you enjoy books about memory, identity, loss, and things that are never completely explained, When the Creatures Come is definitely worth trying.
