Twixt
Twixt follows Lottie, who wakes up beside a frozen river with bloody hands, no memories, and no idea how she got there. She soon discovers a strange place called Abeo City, where lost souls known as Sleepers hide from terrifying creatures called Snatchers and trade pieces of their hair for a drug that can return fragments of memory.
The book mixes dark fantasy, horror, mystery, and a lesbian romance between Lottie and Charlie. What works best is the strange atmosphere and the feeling that Lottie does not fit the same rules as everyone else around her. The romance gives the story some warmth, but the bigger mystery about Twixt, Lottie’s past, and why the monsters treat her differently keeps the plot moving.
The Goods
- Strong dark-fantasy atmosphere
- Good lesbian romance
- Interesting memory-loss mystery
- The Snatchers are genuinely creepy
- Very original world
The Bads
- The world can be confusing at first
- Some characters need more depth
- A few twists are easier to guess
- The mythology could be explained more
- The pacing slows in places
My Recommendation
This is a strong choice for readers who like lesbian YA fantasy, darker fairy-tale worlds, and stories built around memory, identity, and mystery. Lottie and Charlie’s relationship adds a softer side to an otherwise creepy setting, and the strange rules of Twixt make the book feel different from a typical paranormal romance. If you enjoy LGBTQ+ fantasy with monsters, lost memories, eerie world-building, and a lesbian romance at the centre, Twixt is definitely worth trying.
