Remnants
Remnants is the fifth book in the Broken Galaxy series and picks up after the Singheko War, with humanity finally getting a chance to breathe after surviving by the narrowest margin. Jim Carter is trying to recover, Rita is adjusting to her new Goblin body, and Bonnie is left dealing with the fragile peace that follows the fighting.
What makes this one different is that the danger comes less from a single huge battle and more from what happens after a war ends. There is rebuilding, mistrust, political tension, and the problem of figuring out what comes next when everyone has already lost so much. The book still has plenty of science-fiction action, but it also gives the characters more room to deal with the aftermath.
The Goods
- Strong post-war atmosphere
- Good character development
- Rita’s new situation is interesting
- Nice change of pace from constant battles
- Sets up the final book well
The Bads
- Slower than some earlier books
- Less action-heavy
- Some political sections drag
- Depends heavily on the earlier books
- A few side characters get limited time
My Recommendation
This is a good entry for readers already invested in the Broken Galaxy series and interested in seeing what happens after the big war instead of just jumping straight into another battle. Remnants spends more time on rebuilding, adjusting, and the tension that comes when old enemies are supposed to live with a fragile peace. If you like military science fiction that also pays attention to the consequences of war and how the characters change afterward, this one adds a lot to the larger story.
