Lies My Girlfriend Told Me
Lies My Girlfriend Told Me follows Alix after the sudden death of her girlfriend, Swanee, leaves her grieving and completely unprepared for what comes next. While going through Swanee’s things, Alix discovers messages from another girl and realizes the relationship she thought she understood may have been built on a lot more secrets than she ever knew.
I liked that the book wasn’t just about the shock of finding out you were lied to. A lot of it is really about grief, anger, betrayal, and trying to figure out what parts of a relationship were real after the person who could answer your questions is gone. Some of Alix’s reactions frustrated me, but I still understood why she made those choices, and that made the emotional messiness feel believable.
The Goods
- Strong lesbian storyline
- Good mix of grief and mystery
- Alix feels emotionally believable
- The betrayal angle adds real tension
- The story gets more complicated as it goes
The Bads
- Some choices are frustrating
- A few side characters need more depth
- The pacing slows in places
- Certain reveals are easier to guess
- The emotional drama can get heavy
My Recommendation
This is a good fit if you like lesbian YA that mixes romance, grief, betrayal, and a bit of mystery. I liked that the story didn’t make Swanee easy to understand after she was gone, because that gave Alix a lot more to work through than simple heartbreak. If you enjoy LGBTQ+ stories about messy relationships, secrets, and trying to rebuild your sense of trust after someone completely changes what you thought you knew, Lies My Girlfriend Told Me is a solid read.
