Dialogue / Writing Style 8.5/10

Dark Roads is set around the isolated Cold Creek Highway in British Columbia, where young women have been disappearing for years. Hailey McBride already knows the road is dangerous, but after her father dies and she ends up living with a controlling police officer, she starts to realize the threat around her may be much closer than the highway itself.

The story shifts between Hailey and Beth, whose sister was murdered near Cold Creek, and slowly brings their lives together. It mixes serial-killer suspense, survival, grief, and small-town secrets really well, with the remote Canadian setting adding a lot of tension. The book keeps you guessing without feeling like it is throwing twists at you just for the sake of it.

The Goods

  • Strong British Columbia setting
  • Good slow-building suspense
  • Hailey is a strong main character
  • The dual viewpoints work well
  • Keeps the mystery interesting

The Bads

  • The middle slows down a little
  • Some characters are easy to distrust
  • A few plot turns feel convenient
  • The small-town corruption angle is familiar
  • Some readers may want a faster pace

My Recommendation

This is a great choice for readers who like psychological thrillers, serial-killer mysteries, and stories set in isolated places where everyone seems to be hiding something. The British Columbia setting gives the book a really strong atmosphere, and the combination of Hailey’s survival story with Beth’s search for answers keeps the plot feeling personal. If you enjoy dark mysteries with strong female characters, remote highways, and a steady build of tension, Dark Roads is definitely worth reading.
