Adaptation
Adaptation follows Reese Holloway and David Li after a freak bird-strike disaster shuts down air travel across the country and leaves them stranded far from home. Their attempt to drive back turns into something much stranger when they crash near a military roadblock and wake up weeks later in a hospital with healed injuries, missing memories, and very few answers.
As Reese tries to understand what happened, she also grows closer to Amber Gray, which adds a strong bisexual and LGBTQ+ element to the story without taking over the main plot. The book mixes conspiracy, government secrecy, science fiction, romance, and identity in a way that keeps things moving and makes the mystery feel bigger the further you get.
The Goods
- Strong conspiracy mystery
- Good bisexual representation
- Fast pacing
- Interesting science-fiction ideas
- Romance fits naturally into the story
The Bads
- Some answers take a long time to arrive
- The love triangle may not work for everyone
- A few twists are easier to predict
- Some government-conspiracy elements feel familiar
- The ending clearly sets up the sequel
My Recommendation
This is a strong choice for readers who like YA science fiction, government conspiracies, bisexual representation, and romance that stays connected to the larger story instead of taking it over. Reese’s relationships with both David and Amber add another layer to the mystery, while the strange medical treatment and missing time keep the science-fiction side moving. If you enjoy paranoid thrillers with LGBTQ+ characters, secret experiments, and a story that keeps opening into something bigger, Adaptation is a very easy book to get pulled into.
