The Long Edge of Night
The Long Edge of Night is the third book in the Broken Galaxy series and puts Bonnie Page in command of the starship Dragon during one of the most dangerous stretches of the war. With her ship damaged, enemy forces closing in, and the daughter of her new First Officer trapped in a slave camp, Bonnie is forced to make decisions where there really are no easy choices.
The book leans heavily into military science fiction, with space battles, command pressure, rescue attempts, and larger threats working in the background. Bonnie is a strong lead because she is tough without feeling invincible, and the story gives her enough emotional baggage to make the action feel personal instead of just another fleet battle.
The Goods
- Strong military sci-fi action
- Bonnie is a solid main character
- Good sense of danger and pressure
- The rescue storyline adds emotional weight
- Keeps the larger war moving forward
The Bads
- Depends a lot on the earlier books
- Some battle scenes feel familiar
- A few side characters need more depth
- The pacing can get hectic
- Not much downtime between major events
My Recommendation
This is a strong choice for readers already invested in the Broken Galaxy series and wanting more fleet action, command decisions, and higher stakes. Bonnie carries the book well, and the mix of military pressure with the personal rescue mission gives the story more emotional weight than a straightforward space battle. If you like military science fiction with damaged ships, desperate choices, and a captain who has to keep going when everything is falling apart, The Long Edge of Night fits the series very well.
