Hunger picks up with the kids inside the FAYZ running out of food while the social order they barely managed to build starts falling apart. Sam is under even more pressure, Caine is still a major threat, and the supernatural side of the story keeps getting darker as the creatures and powers inside the barrier become harder to understand.

I liked that the book didn’t just repeat the first one. The lack of food changes everything, because suddenly even the kids who were trying to do the right thing are being pushed into uglier choices. Some of their decisions drove me crazy, but that’s part of what made them believable. The story gets darker, meaner, and more desperate, which made the FAYZ feel a lot more dangerous this time around.

The Goods

  • The hunger crisis raises the stakes
  • Sam gets more pressure and responsibility
  • The FAYZ feels more dangerous
  • Good mix of survival and supernatural threats
  • The darker tone works well

The Bads

  • A lot of characters to keep track of
  • Some storylines are stronger than others
  • The violence gets pretty intense
  • A few sections feel chaotic
  • The middle slows down in places

My Recommendation

This is a strong follow-up if you liked Gone and wanted the FAYZ to feel even more unstable and dangerous. The food shortage changes the whole mood of the story, and I liked that the book explored how quickly people can turn on each other when basic survival starts becoming a real problem. If you enjoy YA dystopian stories with powers, moral pressure, and characters being forced into harder choices, Hunger definitely pushes the series in a darker direction.
