Departure

Science Fiction, Thriller, Mystery

Book Score8out of 10
Plot & Storyline 8.5/10
Characters 8/10
Dialogue / Writing Style 8/10

Departure starts with a commercial flight crashing in the English countryside, but the survivors quickly realize something is very wrong with where they have landed. What first looks like a straightforward disaster story turns into a much bigger science-fiction mystery involving identity, the future, and why this particular group of people survived.

The book moves quickly and keeps adding new questions without completely losing the human side of the story. The central mystery is the strongest part, and once the time-travel element becomes clear, the plot opens up into something much more ambitious than the crash setup suggests.

The Goods

  • Strong central mystery
  • Fast pacing
  • Interesting time-travel ideas
  • Good sense of tension
  • The story keeps getting bigger

The Bads

  • Some characters need more depth
  • A few twists stretch believability
  • The science gets complicated in places
  • Certain explanations come late
  • The ending may feel too neat for some readers

My Recommendation

This is a good choice for readers who like science-fiction thrillers, plane-crash mysteries, and stories where the situation becomes much stranger the deeper you get into it. Departure starts with a very simple survival setup and then gradually turns into a bigger story about time, identity, and the future. If you enjoy fast sci-fi with mystery, twists, and a strong “what is actually going on?” feeling, this one is very easy to get pulled into.
