Artificial Condition

Book 2 of The Murderbot Diaries

Science Fiction

Book Score9out of 10
Plot & Storyline 8.5/10
Characters 9/10
Dialogue / Writing Style 9/10

Artificial Condition picks up with Murderbot trying to uncover the truth about a violent incident from its past. That search leads it to team up with a research transport AI it nicknames ART, and the relationship between the two becomes one of the best parts of the book.

The story is still fast and funny, but it also digs deeper into Murderbot’s identity, memory, and guilt. There is more mystery this time, and the book does a great job balancing that with the awkward humour and emotional distance that make Murderbot such a fun character to follow.

The Goods

  • Murderbot and ART are a great pairing
  • Very funny dialogue
  • More depth to Murderbot’s past
  • Strong mix of mystery and science fiction
  • Fast and easy to read

The Bads

  • Still very short
  • Some side characters are lightly developed
  • The mystery is fairly straightforward
  • A few details depend on remembering the first book
  • Ends before you really want it to

My Recommendation

Anyone who enjoyed All Systems Red should have an even better time with this one, especially because the friendship between Murderbot and ART adds so much personality to the story. The humour is sharper, the mystery gives the plot more direction, and Murderbot starts to feel more emotionally complicated without losing what made the first book fun. If you like character-driven science fiction with dry humour, AI characters, and a little mystery mixed in, this is a very strong sequel.
