A Family Secret is Maureen Wood’s memoir about growing up in a home where the people who were supposed to protect her became the ones causing the most harm. She writes about years of abuse by members of her own family and the way that kind of childhood can completely change how a person sees trust, safety, and love.

The book is very direct and often difficult to read, but that honesty is what gives it most of its impact. Wood does not try to make her story neat or comfortable, and the result is a memoir that feels raw, personal, and focused more on survival than on trying to explain everything away.

The Goods

  • Very honest and personal
  • Strong firsthand perspective
  • Shows the long-term effects of abuse clearly
  • Easy to follow despite the heavy subject
  • Emotionally powerful without feeling overdone

The Bads

  • Extremely difficult subject matter
  • Some sections can be emotionally exhausting
  • A few parts feel repetitive
  • Not much relief between heavier moments
  • Definitely not for every reader

My Recommendation

This is best suited to readers who can handle very heavy memoirs and true stories about abuse, survival, and family trauma. It is not an easy book, but the firsthand perspective makes it powerful, and Wood’s willingness to speak plainly about what happened gives the story real weight. Anyone sensitive to child abuse or sexual violence should know going in that this one can be extremely upsetting.
