12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos
This one has some genuinely useful ideas about responsibility, discipline and getting your own life in order. The main points come through clearly, and I came away with several practical takeaways I can actually use.
It does have its slow stretches, though. Some chapters wander much farther than they need to, and the book repeats itself in places. A few points could easily have been made in half the space. The uneven parts are hard to ignore, but there's still enough good material here to make the read worthwhile.
The Goods
- Clear main ideas
- Useful thoughts on taking responsibility for your own life
- A good push towards discipline and getting your life in order
- Several practical takeaways you can actually use
- Easy to dip back into later
The Bads
- Repeats itself a bit
- Some chapters wander much farther than they need to
- Some points could have been made in half the space
- Uneven, with stronger and weaker chapters
- Not every rule felt useful to me
My Recommendation
I'd recommend 12 Rules for Life to anyone looking for practical ideas on taking responsibility, building discipline and getting their own life in order. It's not a book you need to read straight through. It works well read a chapter at a time, and it's easy to come back to whenever you want a reminder. Be ready to skim the parts that wander or repeat themselves, because the book is uneven. But the useful ideas are worth digging out, and there's enough good material here to make it worth your time.
